New organ, Alexander Schuke Orgelbau GmbH, 1992
Already during the construction of the choir organ in Erfurt Cathedral in 1963 (op. 336) with only 29 stops on II manuals and pedal, controlled by electric action, the main console was planned and built with three manuals and pedal.
But it took until 1992 for the main organ (op. 583) to be built with III manuals and pedal and 63 stops with electric stop action.
The outdated main console in the sanctuary was not connected to the main organ, but the choir organ can be played as a remote work by means of light guides from the mechanical console of the main organ.
