Restoration of the Stertzing organ from 1702, Alexander Schuke Orgelbau GmbH, 2005

With the restoration and reconstruction in 2005 of the Georg-Christoph-Stertzing organ from 1702, a master is posthumously honoured who is absolutely equal in quality to the Hamburg organ builder Arp Schnitger.

Hardly any other organ builder can show such a close relationship to the Bach family, which has shaped him and his instruments over the years. When building the organ on the Petersberg in Erfurt (Büßleben) with 28 stops in the Oberwerk, Brustwerk and Pedal, he dispensed with all sorts of gimmicks such as tremulant or Cymbelstern, giving it a purely liturgical character.

In the Erfurt area the Stertzing organ is the only surviving organ from the time around 1700 and in the whole of Thuringia it is even the oldest in its size.

The tuning is medium-toned according to Praetorius, but 1.5 tones higher than normal (a’ = 523.2 Hz at 18 °C).
